The GNUmed project builds free, liberated open source Electronic Medical Record software to assist and improve longitudinal care. It is made available at no charge and is capable of running on GNU/Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. It is developed by a handful of medical doctors and programmers from all over the world. It can be useful to anyone documenting the health of patients including, but not limited to, doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists …

What is GNUmed?
GnuMed is a group of practising doctors, programmers and free software enthusiasts from around the world, committed to provide a superior, free software solution for community practice. Using tried-and-true technology, GNUmed software will start out having record-keeping, but will eventually cover all aspects of medical practice, and will interface well with third-party software. Technically speaking, it tries to do things “cleanly”, but takes a pragmatic rather than purist approach. Currently, GNUmed’s data is accessed via business objects implemented in Python which provide and govern direct access to the PostgreSQL RDBMS, but GNUmed will also be able access various types of data stores such as other RDBMS or LDAP.
GNUmed cleanly separates the medical aspects (record keeping) from the administrative aspects (billing, storage) of a medical practice. Thereby it allows GNUmed to be internationalized to different jurisdictions.
Who is GNUmed for?
GNUmed is suitable for any health care provider interested in keeping a sound and comprehensive medical record. It is currently in use with GPs and physical therapists. GNUmed safely operates on networks of a few to many users, and supports secure, remote access. It does also operate on a single computer, which makes it possible to initially examine the software, and may suit doctors or nurse clinicians serving rural or disadvantaged areas with limited infrastructure.
This is done by installing a “localhost” database in your machine or server infrastructure. More Information on the Documentation.
What can GNUmed do for me today ?
As of August 2009 GNUmed can be used to do the following:
OpenClinica is a free, open source clinical trial software platform for Electronic Data Capture (EDC) clinical data management in clinical research. The software is web-based and designed to support all types of clinical studies in diverse research settings. From the ground up, OpenClinica is built on leading, independent standards to achieve high levels of interoperability and regulatory compliance. Its modular architecture and transparent, collaborative development model offer outstanding flexibility while supporting a robust, enterprise class, regulatory compliant, solution.
The OpenClinica software platform supports:
- Management of numerous, diverse clinical studies through a unified interface
- Clinical data submission, validation, and annotation
- Data filtering and extraction
- Study oversight, auditing, and reporting
The main functionality includes:
- Submit Data: Allows subject enrollment, data submission and validation for use by clinicians and research associates as well as Query Management and Bulk Data Import.
- Monitor and Manage Data: Enables ongoing data management and monitoring.
- Extract Data: Enables data extraction and filtering of datasets for use by investigators and principal investigators.
- Study Build: Facilitates creation and management of studies (protocols), sites, CRFs, users and study event definitions by principal investigators and coordinators.
- Administration: Allows overall system oversight, auditing, configuration, and reporting by administrators.

Medical is a multi-user, highly scalable, centralized Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Hospital Information System for openERP.
Objective rovide a free universal Health and Hospital Information System, so doctors and institutions all over the world, specially in developing countries will benefit from a centralized, high quality, secure and scalable system.
Medical at a glance:
- Strong focus in family medicine and Primary Health Care
- Major interest in Socio-economics (housing conditions, substance abuse, education…)
- Diseases and Medical procedures standards (ICD-10 / ICD-10-PCS)
- Patient Genetic and Hereditary risks : Over 4200 genes related to diseases (NCBI / Genecards)
- Epidemiological and other statistical reports
- 100% paperless patient examination and history taking
- Patient Administration (creation, evaluations / consultations, history … )
- Doctor Administration
- Lab Administration
- Medicine / Drugs information (vademécum)
- Medical stock and supply chain management
- Hospital Financial Administration
- Designed with industry standards in mind
- Open Source : Licensed under GPL v3
The data model is designed in such a way that centralizes the information, so no duplication occurs.
On the other hand, medical optimizes collaboration and communication between health professionals. For example, a doctor may request an specific lab test for a patient, this is processed by the pathologist which diagnoses it and inputs the result on the system. The doctor now has all the analysis information linked to the patient chart.
Medical allows to attach documents (X-rays, Biopsy results, … ) to the Patient chart.
